26Maintaining A Prosperous Business With Right Actions
Filed in: Mental Healing, Money Beyond Belief by admin on 01-26-10Have you noticed that almost every company has a problem with employee problems? People come and go after a few months to a few years. This surely affects the performance and productivity of the company. Yet, I do know of companies that have the same staff even after 30 years! And this is not a family business!
Indeed, there is a restaurant I used to frequent as a student more than 20 years ago that still employs the same group of people.
There is another 24hrs Indian restaurant in KL that my wife used to visit. They have the same people, and the most interesting part was that they had managed to stay in business for more than 2 years whereas all the restaurants around them changed hands after every few months.
We interviewed the boss, who happened to be cleaning the tables, imagine, the boss himself, wiping the tables at 7am in the morning. It is often the bosses, who order their subordinates to do the jobs, but this boss was different, he does the cleaning himself.
“Why do you, as the boss, need to clean the tables personally?” we asked.
“My people need to do the cooking and if I don’t clean the tables before the customers come, my men will not have enough time to clean. This is bad for my customers.” He answered.
Just last Sunday, I was at a charity event for single moms in Malaysia and I saw the chairman arranging the tables and cleaning and arranging the premises. When asked why he was doing himself, he said he leads by example. He cannot order the helpers as they were all volunteers for the event. As he started to work, the rest will follow.
These events go to show that a leader must be hardworking and lead by example. When employees see that their bosses are working with their hands and not with their mouths, they will not slack, find excuses, and will be ashamed to be lazy. Instead, they will be motivated.
Likewise, a boss who is bossy like a policeman tends to make his staff feel oppressed and unfair. You can imagine the outcome, low productivity, high absenteeism etc.
The difference lies in a wrong perception of authority and face values. In fact, the boss who is a servant to his staff (I mean working by example and caring for his employees) will gain the respect and loyalty of his staff.
Loyalty affects productivity. A disloyal employee will destroy the company!
Loyalty needs to be earned, it is not by default. Loyalty will bring prosperity!
May all employers enjoy a Prosperous Chinese Lunar New Year!
Thank you! I Love you!
